Eng. Qamar Uddin said: "On Wednesday 24th September 2014 (29th Dhul Hijjah as per Ummul Qura Calendar) I was in Dammam (Saudi Arabia) and decided to join the local Hilal observer group. The sun disappeared 5 minutes before the local sunset behind the hazy/dusty horizon, so there was no chance of sighting the hilal, even with telescopes.

I was told that none of the official Hilal Committee Members were able to sight the hilal either, but the court has accepted the claims of a few early-sighters from near Riyadh (Shaqra/Sudair), even though the moon was not expected to be sighted anywhere in the whole world on that evening.

I should also mention that the Saudi scholars strictly follow the Fiqh ruling of Ikhtilaf-Matale (difference of horizons) and hence they do not accept any sighting reports from outside their country. They also advise all neighbouring and foreign countries to follow their own respective sightings and not that of Saudi Arabia, even for fasting on the “Day of Arafah”!

Consequently, Eid-ul Adha will be on Saturday 4th October 2014 in Saudi Arabia (and those who choose to follow them without any undue influence) and on Sunday 5th October 2014 for all those who follow verified moon sighting news (Muhaqaq-Ruyat-Basari). Eid Muabark to all Muslims."

The Muslim Judicial Council and the United Ulama Council of South Africa confirmed that Eidul Adhaa shall be on Sunday 5 October 2014, whilst Majlisush Shura al Islami and the Islamic Council of South Africa, determined Eidul Adhaa to be on Saturday, 4 October 2014. As a consequence of which, South Africa shall sadly be split on the celebration of Eidul Adhaa tis year again.

Austria

1 . Time of observation: After sunset. Seen: ICOP member Eng. Eng. Martin Elsaesser said: "I observed the evening crescent from the site of a large telescope convention in the austrian alps, the "ITT" at a height of 1800m. The weather was cloudy but showed some promising gaps in the west. The air was very clear and dry so i had good hopes of finding the crescent even though it would set soon after the sun. The imaging system easily showed the crescent when it came into the gap in the clouds (only 2° above the horizon) and i could also see it clear enough with 12x50 binoculars. I could follow the crescent with the imaging system till it sank behind very distant mountains. The visual view got better after the first sighting as the sky got darker and due to the very good transparency the lower altitude did not harm the view at all."
