When to Observe Rabee' Al-Aakher Waxing (NEW) Crescent ?


The geocentric conjunction (Geocentric New Moon) will occur Inshalla on (Thursday 29 December 2016) at 06:53 UT.

Sighting the new crescent on (Thursday 29 December 2016) and (Friday 30 December 2016) is shown in the below graphs using the program Accurate Times by Mohammad Odeh according to Odeh criterion. Where:-

According to the Universal Hejric Calendar (UHC), which is based on the calculated crescent visibility, the start of this month in the Eastern Region will be on Saturday 31 December 2016 and in the Western Region will be on Friday 30 December 2016. Kindly notice that the UHC is a pre-calculated calendar, which adopts a certain criterion to start the new Hejric month. Your country/organization might adopt different criterion to start the new Hejric month. So it is highly advised to read the UHC website before giving any judgment.

United Kingdom

Qamar Uddin from York City in North Yorkshire State mentioned that the sky was totally cloudy, the atmospheric condition was very hazy, the crescent was not seen by naked eye, the crescent was not sought by binocular, the crescent was not sought by telescope, the crescent was not sought by CCD Imaging
Eng. Qamar Uddin said: "It was totally cloudy in York after sunset today, but we hope to see it easily tomorrow 30/12/2016 (weather permitting) inshaAllah."

The new crescent of Rabiul Akhir 1438 AH was NOT SEEN on Friday, 30 Dec 2016 from my location Bendo Ketitang Juwiring Klaten Central Java Indonesia, the sky was rainy.

The new crescent was seen by Mr. Ahmad I. Adjie and team from Nort Bandung West Java Indonesia."

Report by: Hossein Janghorbani (Najmosepehr-Sadrolmonajjemin) – Manager of Shahreza Crescent Association and Red Crescent’s Astronomy and Geophysics Center
Date: Friday, 12/30/2016
Location: Damzad foothills in the East of Shahreza (latitude: 32 00 N, longitude: 51 52 E, elevation: 1825m from sea level, time zone: +3.5 GMT)
Equipments: One sets of 15*70 binoculars, One sets of 7*50 binoculars, One compass.
Atmospheric condition: partly cloudy and Hazy in western horizon.
Horizon obstacles: 1/5°
Apparent sunset: 16:58
Results: Moon crescent was seen by 15*70 binoculars by Hossein Janghorbani at 17:10, for the first time. Other group members observed crescent by binoculars subsequently. Crescent observed by Hossein Janghorbani at 17:13 by naked eye. Other group members observed crescent by naked eye.
At the end of Mr. Hossein Janghorbani announced Based on Meteorological research The Astronomy And Geophysics Center of Shahreza per month January and February 2017 In the south Isfahan province especially cities of Shahreza , Dehaghan , Semirom Witness the descent Heavy rains and Snow and Blizzard Will be So that one of These systems Precipitation  For Three  days In these areas Will be active.

Not Seen: ICOP member Mr. Yunusa Yakubu from Bauchi City in Bauchi State mentioned that the sky was partly cloudy, the atmospheric condition was very hazy, the crescent was not seen by naked eye, the crescent was not seen by binocular, the crescent was not sought by telescope, the crescent was not sought by CCD Imaging
Mr. Yunusa Yakubu said: "There exist poor visibility in Bauchi as the atmospheric condition was Very Hazy, The Sun was hazy covered at 17:50, I could not sight the crescent at best time i.e. (18:44). Only Venus and Mars were easily visible."



Saudi Arabia


1 . Time of observation: After sunset. Seen: ICOP member Mr. Turki Alamri from Sewerqia City in Almadina State mentioned that the sky was clear, the atmospheric condition was hazy, the crescent was seen by naked eye, the crescent was not sought by binocular, the crescent was not sought by telescope, the crescent was not sought by CCD Imaging
Mr. Turki Alamri said: "I had to wait a bout 20 minutes after sunset  to see the new crescent by naked eye due to bad sky condition"

Seen: ICOP member Dr. Ayyub Patel from Darb near ABHA City in Aseer Jizan State mentioned that the sky was clear, the atmospheric condition was hazy, the crescent was seen by naked eye, the crescent was not sought by binocular, the crescent was not sought by telescope, the crescent was not sought by CCD Imaging
Dr. Ayyub Patel said: "Crescent moon waxing for Rabi Akhar was easily seen by naked eye."

Mr. Turki Alamri said: "I setup my equipment  early morning trying to catch the new crescent just after moon rise in eastern side ,  sky condition id not so good with AOD value 0.18 for 619nm .

Not Seen: ICOP member Mr. Abdul Rahman Razeen from Colombo-04 City in Western province State mentioned that the sky was totally cloudy, the atmospheric condition was very hazy, the crescent was not seen by naked eye, the crescent was not sought by binocular, the crescent was not sought by telescope, the crescent was not sought by CCD Imaging
Mr. Abdul Rahman Razeen said: "Aalaikum.
Today 30-12-2016AD=29-03-1438AH is the sighting day for the month of Rabeeunissanee 1438AH..
 I was in Colombo and Went to Nimal road mosque Bambalapitiya  20 minutes before the Sunset.The horizon was cloudy.
The parameters are(at Colombol) Sun set:6.05pm. Moon set:7:04pm.
Lag=59minutes
The prediction of the astronomers=Crescent can be sighted easily.
I was associated by bro.Irfan Razik and students of higher grade from an arabic madrasah.
We couldn't sight it due to cloudy and the CGM Hilal Committee has received negative sighting reports right round the country.
Hence it was decided by the CGMH Committee which was precided by Moulana Riyad (Baari) along with ACJU and MRCA  to complete the proceeding month as 30 days and start the month of Rabeeunissanee on 1st of January 2017."



United Kingdom

Eng. Qamar Uddin said: "On Friday 30th December 2016, the Hilal of Rabi-ul Thani 1438 AH was seen with difficulty (due to heavy clouds) from York Astronomical Society, York (UK) after sunset by myself and Br Aqaele Peeroo. 

The Hilal was over 33 hours old, but it was not seen yesterday when it was 9 hours old. According to Hadith, this is the first day's Hilal even though it may look big, because it was hidden the day before! See a short video report (2 mins) at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tUrBLJGlsY0"

1 . Time of observation: After sunset. Seen: ICOP member Dr. Javad Torabinejad from Blacksburg City in Virginia State mentioned that the sky was partly cloudy, the atmospheric condition was clear, the crescent was seen by naked eye, the crescent was not sought by binocular, the crescent was not sought by telescope, the crescent was not sought by CCD Imaging
Dr. Javad Torabinejad said: "I arrived at my sighting location (the Blacksburg Middle School) at 5:26 pm EST (sunset: 5:13 pm).  The western horizon was partly cloudy with a large piece of cloud over the area where the moon supposed to be located.  I waited till 5:48 pm for the moon to show up in a small clearing.  It was thin but easy to spot.  The horns were at 3:00 and 7:30 O'clock (3:00;5:00;7:30).  I stayed there till 6:30 pm when the moon was still about 2 degrees above the horizon (moonset: 6:48 pm). "

Dr. Ayyub Patel said: "Sky was very clear on this day 28th dec 2016 morning 6am. The weather was cold 7-10deg C. The waning crescent was easily seen by naked eye for around 30 min. Then it was visible by Celestron Skymaster 15x70 binoculars for about 5 mins. Amazing hairline crescent could be seen by using binoculars."
