When to Observe Shawwal Waxing (NEW) Crescent ?


The geocentric conjunction (Geocentric New Moon) will occur Inshalla on (Saturday 26 July 2014) at 22:42 UT.

Sighting the new crescent on (Saturday 26 July 2014) and (Sunday 27 July 2014) is shown in the below graphs using the program Accurate Times by Mohammad Odeh according to Odeh criterion. Where:-

According to the Universal Hejric Calendar (UHC), which is based on the calculated crescent visibility, the start of this month in the Eastern Region will be on Monday 28 July 2014 and in the Western Region will be on Monday 28 July 2014. Kindly notice that the UHC is a pre-calculated calendar, which adopts a certain criterion to start the new Hejric month. Your country/organization might adopt different criterion to start the new Hejric month. So it is highly advised to read the UHC website before giving any judgment.

Algeria


1 . Time of observation: After sunset. Not Seen: ICOP member Dr. Abdallah Ouragh from بريان City in تغردايت State mentioned that the sky was partly cloudy, the atmospheric condition was hazy, the crescent was not seen by naked eye, the crescent was not seen by binocular, the crescent was not sought by telescope, the crescent was not sought by CCD Imaging



2 . Time of observation: After sunset. Not Seen: ICOP member Mr. Hocine Chikh Aissa from Ghardaia City in Ghardaia State mentioned that the sky was partly cloudy, the atmospheric condition was hazy, the crescent was not seen by naked eye, the crescent was not seen by binocular, the crescent was not sought by telescope, the crescent was not sought by CCD Imaging
Mr. Hocine Chikh Aissa said: "The new crescent of shawwal 1435 was not seen ,The western horizon was partly cloudy and hazy. The Sun set Behind clouds at 19:44, Takabal Allah EL siam wa EL kiam, Aid mubarek for all Muslimen..."



Brunei Darussalam


1 . Time of observation: After sunset. Not Seen: ICOP member Dr. Mohammed Hussain Ahmad from Bandar Seri Begawan City in B State mentioned that the sky was partly cloudy, the atmospheric condition was hazy, the crescent was not seen by naked eye, the crescent was not seen by binocular, the crescent was not seen by telescope, the crescent was not sought by CCD Imaging
Dr. Mohammed Hussain   Ahmad said: "Al-salam 'alaykum 

The new moon was not sighted from Brunei (4° 55′ North and 114° 55′ East) on the evening of Sunday, 27 July 2014. This was officially announced through the Brunei National TV and Radio stations. Therefore, tomorrow, Monday, 28 August 2014 is the completion of 30 days for the month of Ramadan in Brunei. Hence, the 1st of Shawwal 1435 will commence on Tuesday, 29 August 2014. 

I would like to take this opportunity to wish Muslims across the world a happy and a blessed Eid Mubarak.

Not Seen: ICOP member Mr. Hazarry Haji Ali Ahmad from Bandar Seri Begawan City in Brunei Muara State mentioned that the sky was clear, the atmospheric condition was clear, the crescent was not seen by naked eye, the crescent was not seen by binocular, the crescent was not seen by telescope, the crescent was not seen by CCD Imaging
Mr. Hazarry Haji Ali Ahmad said: "This evening, Ramadhan 29 corresponding to July 27, hilal of Syawal was failed to sight in the Sultanate failed in attempts during rukyah of the first of Syawal 1435 Hijrah.

Sighting of the new moon of Syawal 1435 was held at several vantage points in the Brunei-Muara, Belait and Tutong Districts. Designated areas include DST Tower, DST Headquarters Building, Tungku Highway; Bukit Agok, Jerudong; Bukit Lumut in Belait District; and Bukit Ambok, Tutong District.

The group assigned to sight the new moon of Syawal comprises of Syari'e judges and officers from the Syariah Courts, State Judiciary Department, the Prime Minister's Office as well as officers from the Ministry of Religious Affairs, the Survey Department, Ministry of Development and the State Mufti Department.

The result of the sighting was officially announced on the same evening over Radio and Television Brunei. "

French Polynesia


1 . Time of observation: After sunset. Seen: ICOP member Dr. Abdelhamid Bentchikou from Faaa City in Tahiti State mentioned that the sky was clear, the atmospheric condition was clear, the crescent was seen by naked eye, the crescent was not sought by binocular, the crescent was not sought by telescope, the crescent was not sought by CCD Imaging

Martin Elsaesser from Munich City in Bavaria State mentioned that the sky was partly cloudy, the atmospheric condition was very hazy, the crescent was not sought by naked eye, the crescent was not sought by binocular, the crescent was not sought by telescope, the crescent was seen by CCD Imaging
Eng. Martin Elsaesser said: "Weather conditions here in Munich were very bad on 27. June. A full cloud cover persisted into the afternoon when some gaps started to appear. I drove for 40 miles to find a place with a somewhat stable situation around 2 hours before sunset. Despite strong haze and billowing clouds with white skies near the sun the imaging system allowed to find the crescent. As the crescent would set before the sun anyway i ended the observation when the next cloudbank approached and went back home."



Ghana


1 . Time of observation: After sunset. Not Seen: ICOP member Mr. Abdul-Aziz Anyang from Accra City in Greater Accra State mentioned that the sky was totally cloudy, the atmospheric condition was very hazy, the crescent was not seen by naked eye, the crescent was not sought by binocular, the crescent was not sought by telescope, the crescent was not sought by CCD Imaging
Mr. Abdul-Aziz Anyang said: "Officially, fasting began on Saturday Jun 28 and hence Sunday July 27 is the 30th day of Ramadan and hence Monday July 28 is the day of Eid.  Eid mubarak to all. "



2 . Time of observation: After sunset. Not Seen: ICOP member Mr. Baba Abdulai from Tamale City in Northern State mentioned that the sky was partly cloudy, the atmospheric condition was hazy, the crescent was not seen by naked eye, the crescent was not sought by binocular, the crescent was not sought by telescope, the crescent was not sought by CCD Imaging
Mr. Baba Abdulai said: "My actual sighting position withing the GPS cordinate which i have presented above. I had earlier on marked out that GPS position on 22 July Tuesday afternoon. But when i got there on the evening of Sunday 27, i noticed that i had to go a little further to west in order to have a better view of the setting sun. I arrived at the sighting post before sunset. Sighting community (Kukuo-Yapalsi, near Bi-Water Resevoir) has one of the highest altitudes in Tamale (about 220 metres above sea level). My improvised sighting post is about 6 metres tall and gave me a very clear view of the western horizon around where the sun set. Yet i did not see any moon."



Indonesia

Not Seen: ICOP member Mr. AR Sugeng Riyadi from Surakarta City in Central Java State mentioned that the sky was partly cloudy, the atmospheric condition was clear, the crescent was not seen by naked eye, the crescent was not seen by binocular, the crescent was not seen by telescope, the crescent was not seen by CCD Imaging
Mr. AR Sugeng Riyadi said: "On Sunday, 27 July 2014, the new Crescent of Shawwal 1435 AH was NOT SEEN from Assalaam Observatory, Pabelan Kartasura Sukoharjo Central Java Indonesia, even the sky was clear but the altitude of the moon was very low (approx 3,6 degree).

(However) The Ministry of Religion on Itsbat declared that the 1st of Shawwal 1435 AH in Indonesia will begin on Monday, 28 July 2014."



Iran

Malaysia


1 . Time of observation: After sunset. Not Seen: ICOP member Mr. Kassim Bahali from Tanjung Bidara City in Melaka State mentioned that the sky was partly cloudy, the atmospheric condition was hazy, the crescent was not seen by naked eye, the crescent was not seen by binocular, the crescent was not seen by telescope, the crescent was not sought by CCD Imaging
Mr. Kassim Bahali said: "More 100 people and the hilal observation committee led by Mufti of Melaka gathered at Al-Khawarizmi Astronomy centre to obseserve hilal of Syawal 1435. The hilal was not seen due to the altitude of the hilal is very low and the western sky was cloudy. The government was officially announced on TV and radio that 1st of Shawwal 1435 will be on Monday 28 July 2014.

Nigeria

Dr. Z.Sani Mustapha said: "It was raining."



2 . Time of observation: After sunset. Not Seen: ICOP member Mr. Qamarudeen Muhammad from Ilorin City in Kwara State mentioned that the sky was totally cloudy, the atmospheric condition was very hazy, the crescent was not seen by naked eye, the crescent was not sought by binocular, the crescent was not sought by telescope, the crescent was not sought by CCD Imaging
Mr. Qamarudeen Muhammad said: "With about 20 people for shawwal sighting, however it was raining heavily by 6:30pm until around 7:40 pm"

Not Seen: ICOP member Dr. Usman El-Nafaty from Bauchi City in Bauchi State mentioned that the sky was totally cloudy, the atmospheric condition was hazy, the crescent was not seen by naked eye, the crescent was not sought by binocular, the crescent was not sought by telescope, the crescent was not sought by CCD Imaging
Dr. Usman El-Nafaty said: "The weather was rainy here today in Bauchi.  Sighting was attempted but not possible due to clouds."



4 . Time of observation: After sunset. Not Seen: ICOP member Mr. Yunusa Yakubu from Bauchi City in Bauchi State mentioned that the sky was partly cloudy, the atmospheric condition was clear, the crescent was not seen by naked eye, the crescent was not seen by binocular, the crescent was not sought by telescope, the crescent was not sought by CCD Imaging
Mr. Yunusa Yakubu said: "at 18hrs we were at the sighting venue 5 of us. the sun set at 18:33 behind cloud,its about to rain we had to leave the place at 18:50 and it rain heavily.

However, the Nigerian situation as regard moon sighting has deteriorated in that authorities announced wrongly; the start and finish dates, in other words; the official first of shawwal is today 27th July,2014.  "



Oman


1 . Time of observation: After sunset. Not Seen: ICOP member Prof. Mohammed Al-Bussaidi from Al-Fulaij Observatory City in Muscat State mentioned that the sky was totally cloudy, the atmospheric condition was very hazy, the crescent was not seen by naked eye, the crescent was not sought by binocular, the crescent was not seen by telescope, the crescent was not seen by CCD Imaging
Prof. Mohammed Al-Bussaidi said: "The weather condition during observation was very cloudy, hazy, and a lot of dust in the atmosphere. The Sun could not be seen 12 minutes prior to sunset. As such the Crescent Moon was not seen."



Saudi Arabia

Sri Lanka


1 . Time of observation: After sunset. Not Seen: ICOP member Mr. Abdul Rahman Razeen from colombo 4 City in western province State mentioned that the sky was totally cloudy, the atmospheric condition was very hazy, the crescent was not sought by naked eye, the crescent was not sought by binocular, the crescent was not sought by telescope, the crescent was not sought by CCD Imaging
Mr. Abdul Rahman Razeen said: "A.alaikum.According to the constitution the sighting for each month will be by unaided eye.We were about 10 ulama's in our sighting place and we grouped up hilalsighting members right around Srilanka and received negative reports unanimously for the first time in regarding for the month of Shawwal.Therefore the Hilal Committee of C.G.M.and the Hilaal Committee of A.C.J.U. and M.R.C.A. decided without any hesitation under the leadership of Moulana M.G.M.Riyadh (Baari) to complete the month of Ramadan 30 and to start month of shawwal on Monday evening."

Mr. Nular Bary said: "Today 29th. of Ramadan1435H (27/07/2014) evening, All members of Colombo Grand Mosque Hilaal Committee, Sri Lanka jamiyathul Ulama, and Representatives of Muslim Religious & Cultural Affairs of Sri Lanka was gathered at The Colombo Grand Mosque to decide on the Eidul-Fithur (1st. day of Shawwal) just after Maghrib (6:30pm). No any positive naked eye sighting was reported from any part of the Island till 8:Pm. Mr. Zaffar Sheriff said: "The possibility of crescent sighting was negative with low altitude of just over 5degrees at sunset. The low elongation, age and duration resulted in no sighting. Alhamdulillah, members from sunni and shia groups stood side by side and declared that Eid will fall on Tuesday 29th July. We have been blessed with yet another day of fasting and gain closeness to our Creator. "



Tunisia

My daughter and I searched for the crescent from 8:28pm until 8:38pm without the use of any optical aids and with relatively clear sky conditions at this time. However, we did not find the new crescent moon.

Dr. Javad Torabinejad said: "I arrived at my sighting location (Blacksburg Middle School) at 8:27 pm EDT (sunset: 8:33 pm).  Soon after, using a pair of binoculars  (10X50), I started scanning the western horizon.  It was partly cloudy and hazy (most of the cloudiness was due south of west, though).  With no sighting success, I left the sit past moonset (moonset: 8:45 pm)."

Eng. Martin Elsaesser said: "The weather was ok during the day but clouds were predicted for the evening. The crescent was already quite wide but would set only a short time after the sun. I left my work early and tried a visual observation around 3h before sunset. I could see the crescent visually through a telescope at 32x using a red filter to dim the bright skies close to the sun. I had to wiggle the optics left and right to clearly see the (moving) crescent. The clouds arrived soon thereafter so there was no chance of observing the crescent after sunset. I also saw the crescent with the imaging system before the clouds got to thick."



Ghana


1 . Time of observation: After sunset. Mr. Baba Abdulai said: "My exact position was a little to the west of the GPS location which I have submitted in this report. I arrived at the sighting post at about 6:22 PM local time. I first saw the crescent at 6:51 PM. As at 7:16 PM,  I could still see the crescent but I did not continue to observe the crescent up till its final setting time. Sighting community: Kukuo-Yapalsi (near Bi-Water reservoir), Tamale."



Indonesia


1 . Time of observation: After sunset. Seen: ICOP member Mr. AR Sugeng Riyadi from Surakarta City in Central Java State mentioned that the sky was partly cloudy, the atmospheric condition was clear, the crescent was seen by naked eye, the crescent was seen by binocular, the crescent was seen by telescope, the crescent was seen by CCD Imaging
Mr. AR Sugeng Riyadi said: "On Monday July 28th, 2014 Mr. Ar Sugeng Riyadi and Muflih Arisa Adnan observed crescent of Shawwal 1435 H. Mr. Ibrahim and Hari, students of Ma'had Aly An Nuur, also joined in this observation. They would like to learn more how to observe crescent. The observation was started before susnset. We used William Optics ZS70 telescope, Bessel I Band filter and Canon EOS 60Da. Thus equipments mounted at Vixen Equatorian Mount. Iris and Adobe Photoshop were utilized for image processing. The sky was partly cloudy. The crescent was seen for first at 16.40. We sucessfully taken images of many shape of crescent in this observation. This observation was finished at 19.00. "

Location: Damzad foothills in the East of Shahreza (latitude: 32 00 N, longitude: 51 52 E, elevation: 1850m from sea level, time zone: +4.5 GMT)
Equipments: two sets of 15*70, three sets of 20*90 binoculars, one sets of 20*80 binocularsm,one telescope 10 inch, one telescope 8 inch, one compass.

Results: Moon crescent was seen by 20*90 binoculars by Mahsa Khajeh  at 19:50 between dust and hazy, for the first time. Other group members observed crescent by binoculars and telescopes subsequently. Crescent observed by  Reza Janghorbani  20:08  by naked eye.

Dr. Javad Torabinejad said: "I arrived at my sighting location (Blacksburg Middle School) after sunset (sunset: 8:32 pm EDT).  Soon after, using a pair of binoculars  (7X50), I started scanning the mostly cloudy western horizon.  I stayed there till 9:20 pm, hoping to see the moon in the small clearings (moonset: 9:17 pm)."
