When to Observe Dhul Hijjah Waxing (NEW) Crescent ?
The geocentric conjunction (Geocentric New Moon) will occur Inshalla on (Sunday 18 June 2023) at 04:37 UT.
Sighting the new crescent on (Sunday 18 June 2023) and (Monday 19 June 2023) is shown in the below graphs using the program Accurate Times by Mohammad Odeh according to Odeh criterion. Where:-
- It is impossible to see the crescent from the areas located under the red color. Because either the Moon on this day sets before the Sunset and/or the topocentric conjunction occurs after the Sunset.
- The crescent is expected to be seen by optical aid only from the areas located under the blue color.
- The crescent is expected to be seen by optical aid from the areas located under the magenta color. In these areas the crescent could be seen by naked eye if the atmospheric conditions are superb and the observer is experienced.
- The crescent is expected to be easily visible by naked eye from the areas located under the green color.
- The crescent cannot be seen from uncolored areas, even though the Moon sets in these locations after the Sunset and the topocentric conjunction occurs before the Sunset, but the Moon is not sufficiently illuminated in order to be seen as crescent even by optical aid.
- Kindly notice that the below graph shows the possibility of seeing the crescent from areas between 60 degrees north of Equator down to 60 degrees south of Equator.
Sunday 18 June 2023

According to the Universal Hejric Calendar (UHC), which is based on the calculated crescent visibility, the start of this month in the Eastern Region will be on Monday 19 June 2023 and in the Western Region will be on Monday 19 June 2023. Kindly notice that the UHC is a pre-calculated calendar, which adopts a certain criterion to start the new Hejric month. Your country/organization might adopt different criterion to start the new Hejric month. So it is highly advised to read the UHC website before giving any judgment.
- Results of seeing the crescent, and the first day of the month in different countries will be added here Inshalla as we receive the reports from ICOP's members. If you wish to be a member in ICOP, or to know more about it, kindly click here.

Crescent observed through 8” SC F/10 telescope with 40mm eyepiece:
A few minutes after the observation time, the first of several short threshold images of the crescent were reported by me and I immediately asked Brad to confirm. He never saw an image of the crescent. He had to guess at the focus and he only tapped the scope (for movement) on the last try. My first images were at a focus number 20 less that the last visuals. I could see something without tapping at first, but tapping was necessary during the last couple of viewings. The image came and went , and the longest time that it lasted was near the end, for about 3 seconds.
Brad said that he was not “persuaded”. And that he didn’t think that I saw the crescent because the focus readings were not consistent.
The scope was pre-set on location, and all of my sightings were in the same spot of the FOV, just slightly to the upper-left of center.
This report was submitted late because I did not want to report an observation that I was not positive about. However, I did see something and felt that this observation could be used as a limit to a telescopic viewing at these criteria.
