(1421 AH)

Last Updated 14 August at 16:15 UT

In this page:-

When to Observe ?

The geocentric new Moon will occur on Monday 31 July 2000, at 02:25 UT. On this day (31 July), the program Moon Calculator by Dr. Monzur Ahmed -according to Yallop criterion- showed that the crescent is expected to be seen by telescopes starting from the middle of the African continent, while it should be seen by naked eyes from the American continents. Other countries should be able to observe the crescent on the next day (01 August). Consequently, arrange to observe the crescent after the sunset of 31 July or 01 August. Kindly click on the below icon to see the visibility parabola as plotted by the program Moon Calculator

Results of seeing the crescent, and the first day of Jumadal Aula in different countries will be added here Inshalla as we receive the reports from ICOP's members. If you wish to be a member in ICOP, or to know more about it, kindly click here.

Observing the Crescent

So far, the earliest sighting of the crescent was on Monday 31 July from Nigeria by Mr. Alabi Isiaq.

Monday 31 July

  • Singapore: ICOP member, Mr. Firdaus Yahya said: "I would like to inform that according to the calendar set by the Islamic Council of Singapore, 1 Jumadil Awal 1421 corresponds to Tuesday, 1 August 2000. Singapore does not perform crescent sighting dues to its unfavorable geographical location. Hence it relies on calculations on the criteria of 3 degrees altitude."

  • Kuwait: ICOP member, Mr. Adel Hassan Mohamad said: "Crescent not seen on 31 July 2000."

  • Jordan: Once again, Al-Ittihad Schools offered us one of their busses to go to the far 220-Km Ash-Shoubak Mountains to observe the crescent. We were happy to meet again the same driver of the previous month, namely Mr. Fayez Ash-Sharef. However, unexpectedly the sky was cloudy, thus no crescent was observed. The observers were: Tarek Katbeh, Ahmad Al-Niamat, Khalid Eid, Ali Katbeh, and Moh'd Odeh.

  • Nigeria: ICOP member, Mr. Alabi Isiaq said: "We sighted the crescent here last Monday 31st July, 2000. "

  • Mexico: Mr. Muhammad Hafiz said: "FOR MEXICO, GUADALAJAR; DUE TO THE RAINY SEASON CRESCENT OBSERVATION IS IMPOSSIBLE FOR THE MONTH OF J. AL AWWAL."

Tuesday 01 August

  • Yemen: ICOP member, Dr. Mojahid Najem said: "I did not see the crescent on Monday but on Tuesday and although it was cloudy I could fortunately observe the crescent through a gap in the clouds, it was seen by my family members also (father, mother and sister) officially Yemen started the month on Wednesday (2nd of Aug.)."

  • Saudi: ICOP member, Mr. Saleh Al-Saab said: "On first of August it was very easy to see it by the naked eye."

  • Kenya: ICOP member, Mr. Mahmood Essa said: "I am happy to report that I was able to observe the new crescent this evening 1/8/00 at about 18.30 our local time. The crescent was visible quite easily and was quite high above the horizon and was visible for quite some time."
