When to Observe ?

The geocentric new Moon will occur Inshalla on (Tuesday 17 June 2004), at 20:27 UT. On this day its not possible to see the crescent from any where in the world.

While on the next day (Friday 18 June 2004) the program Moon Calculator by Dr. Monzur Ahmed -according to Yallop criterion- showed that it is possible to see the crescent by optical aid from middle and west Asia, most parts of Europe and middle parts of Africa and South America. While it should be visible by naked eye from north and west Africa, North and Central America and North parts of south America.

According to the actual sighting of the crescent, the start of Jumadal I should be on Saturday 19 June 2004 in most of the countries of the world and on Sunday 20 June 2004 in Australia and South East Asia.

Results of Observation

So far, the earliest sighting of the crescent was on Friday 18 June 2004 from Jordan by JAS

Friday 18 June 2004:

  • Brunei:
    • ICOP member Mr. Hazarry Haji Ali Ahmad: Not seen. The new moon watching was attended by the Survey Department as well as members of the Astronomical Society of Brunei Darussalam by binoculars and telescope, but it was not seen, the western Horizon was partly cloudy with haze.

  • Iran:
    • ICOP member Mr. Alireza Mehrani: Not seen. "The west horizon was covered by clouds."
    • ICOP member Mr. Majid Marzani: Not seen. (Cloudy)

  • Saudi Arabia:
    • ICOP member Mr. Saleh Al-Saab: Not seen. "The sky was clear, I was able to see Satern till about seven minutes before setting because it was illuminated 100%. With the crescent the illumination was only 0.7% and this is the reason for not see it."
    • ICOP member Mr. Anwar Al-Muhammad: Not seen. "I with 5 persons from QAS traied to sight the new crescent of JumadlWal, by using both LX 200 10" telscope and naked eye. The weastern hrizon was clear but we could not see the crescent by a naked eye nor the telescope."

  • Jordan:
    • JAS member Eng. Tarek Hadi: Seen. "Observing from the house roof in the middle of the city of Amman. seen through 10" LX200GPS Meade, to the left of the sunset. From 19:55 to 20:12 LT when sight got blocked by city buildings. Broken and very slim with moderate contrast with the sky behind. Light smog was present in the western horizon. Tareq I. Hadi and Son; Ibrahim Hadi."

    • ICOP member Dr. Tarek Katbeh: Not seen. " There were about 15 members of JAS at Marj Alhamam (15 KM to the south west of Amman) trying to observe the crescent by naked eyes and binoculars, but NO one was able to see the crescent due to the heavy smog in the western horizon."

  • Algeria:
    • ICOP member Mr. Bankih Kacem: Seen. " The Djumada I 1425 Crescent was seen from Merkich station. western horizon was hazy. Two from five members have seen this thin Crescent by binoculars, It was not seen by naked eyes."

  • South Africa:
    • ICOP member Mr. Abdurrazak Ebrahim: Not seen. " Attempts made by naked-eye, binoculars and telescope. A reddish haze on the horizon."

  • Nigeria:
    • ICOP member Mr. Muhammed Yasin Qamerdin: Not seen. " We try to sigth for crscent today in lagos and abuja(telephone chart), but we are unable to see any crescent in the western horizon. This may be due to cloudy atmosphere because this month witness such condition. venus is not visible since almost at the beginnig of rabiul thanni, include tonight. Jupiter is brigth and shinning at almost zenith, because this is only area of sky where the condition is clear."

  • Greece:
    • ICOP member Eng. Mohammad Odeh: Not seen. " Despite having some clear gaps among the clouds, the crescent was not seen neither by naked eyes nor by binoculars! Seems the crescent kept 'walking' behind the clouds and it was shy to show :-)!"

  • Germany:
    • ICOP member Mr. Gerhard Ahmad Kaufmann: Not seen. (Cloudy)

  • USA:
    • ICOP member Dr. Javad Torabinejad: Seen. " Due to high humidity and some clouds in the western horizon, I was not able to see the crescent with naked eye." It was seen through 7X50 binocular.
    • ICOP member Ms. Mary Singer: Seen. "This month I observed the crescent (from Spokane, Washington) with two Muslim women friends who were delighted to observe with me. We all saw the very thin crescent, first with the binoculars, and then easily with the eyes. It appeared to be a "shortened" crescent again this month, but still magnificent. My friends also got to see their first "earthshine" through the binoculars."
