When to Observe ?

The geocentric new Moon will occur Inshalla on (Saturday 17 July 2004), at 11:24 UT. On this day the program Moon Calculator by Dr. Monzur Ahmed -according to Yallop criterion- showed that it is possible to see the crescent by optical aid only from small parts of the pacific ocean.

While on the next day (Sunday 18 July 2004) it should be visible by naked eyes from most of the countries of the world.

According to the actual sighting of the crescent, the start of Jumadal II should be on Monday 19 July 2004 in most of the countries of the world.

Results of Observation

So far, the earliest sighting of the crescent was on Sunday 18 July 2004 from Iran by ICOP member Mr. Alireza Mehrani.

Saturday 17 July 2004:

  • Australia:
    • ICOP member Mr. Rami El Sahamarani: Not seen.

  • Saudi Arabia:
    • ICOP member Mr. Saleh Al-Saab: Not seen. "The crescent sets after (17) minutes of the sunset, and the altitude was only (3) degrees ."

  • Algeria:
    • ICOP member Mr. Bankih Kacem: Not seen. (Cloudy)

  • Nigeria:
    • ICOP member Mr. Usman Duhhu: Not seen. "It was cloudy here in Bauchi."
Sunday 18 July 2004:

  • Brunei:
    • ICOP member Mr. Hazarry Haji Ali Ahmad: Not seen. (Cloudy). "Present at the new moon sighting site were personel from the Survey Department and the members of the Astronomical Society of Brunei."

  • Iran:
    • ICOP member Mr. Majid Marzani: Seen.
    • ICOP member Mr. Alireza Mehrani: Seen.

  • Algeria:
    • ICOP member Mr. Bankih Kacem: Not seen. "The western horizon was prtly clody, the Jumada II 1425 crescent was not seen. Mercury was seen betweenn clouds but not the crescent."

  • South Africa:
    • ICOP member Mr. Abdurrazak Ebrahim: Seen. "The Hilaal for Jamadith Thani was sighted from various localities in South Africa, viz. Kimberley, Stellenbosch, and Signal Hill."

  • Nigeria:
    • ICOP member Mr. Usman Duhhu: Not seen. "It was cloudy here in Bauchi."

  • Germany:
    • ICOP member Mr. Gerhard Ahmad Kaufmann: Not seen. (Cloudy)

  • USA:
    • ICOP member Mr. Gulamabbas Khakoo: Seen. "Sighted the crescent with naked eye this evening of Sunday, July 18th, 2004 local time 8:15pm here in Long Beach, area of greater Los Angeles, California. USA. The top horn of the crescent was between 12&1 and the bottom horn was between 7&8 closer to 7. The sighting was very clear. "
    • ICOP member Ms. Mary Singer: Not seen. "The crescent was NOT seen from Spokane, Washington, USA. Western sky very cloudy."
    • ICOP member Dr. Javad Torabinejad: Not seen. "The western horizon was mostly cloudy with a few clear patches!" "
