The geocentric new Moon will occur on Wednesday 23 May 2001, at 02:46 UT. On this day (23 May), the program Moon Calculator by Dr. Monzur Ahmed -according to Yallop criterion- showed that Inshalla the crescent should be seen with optical aid from parts of western Africa, while it should be visible by naked eyes from parts of Western America. ACCORDING TO THE ACTUAL SIGHTING OF THE CRESCENT, THE START OF RABEE' AWWAL SHOULD BE ON Thursday 24 May 2001 IN WESTERN COUNTRIES, OR ON FRIDAY 25 MAY IN EASTERN COUNTRIES. Kindly click on the below icon to see the visibility parabola as plotted by the program Moon Calculator

Results of seeing the crescent, and the first day of the month in different countries will be added here Inshalla as we receive the reports from ICOP's members. If you wish to be a member in ICOP, or to know more about it, kindly click here.

  • Morocco: ICOP member, Dr. Hamid TOUMA said: "Yesterday (Wednesday), during the principal night news TV, the Moroccan Gouvernement has announced that they have tried to observe the Crescent of the Moon, but it was not been visible within the all Morocco aerea, so the first day of Rabee'Awwal is tomorrow Friday 25 May 2001 in Morocco. This decision is good relatively to database of astronomy. As you know the New Moon was yesterday Wednesday 23 May 2001 on 3h 46 mn (AM UT) and on the juste after the Sunset on the same day the Crescent has only 17 hours of life so it was praticaly impossible to observe it. And for more information in Morocco we apply the Creteria to observe the Crescent of the Moon :It must have more then 20 hours of life, to be visible.I would like take this opportunity to express my sinceres wishes a good and happy month and a good AID MAOULID ANNABAOUI to you, to all members of ICOP, and to all muslims in the world.

However according to the official calendar today,Thusday 24 May 2001, is the beginning of Rabi-ul-Auwal. "
