When to Observe Rabee' Al-Awwal Waxing (NEW) Crescent ?
The geocentric conjunction (Geocentric New Moon) will occur Inshalla on (Friday 15 September 2023) at 01:40 UT.
Sighting the new crescent on (Friday 15 September 2023) and (Saturday 16 September 2023) is shown in the below graphs using the program Accurate Times by Mohammad Odeh according to Odeh criterion. Where:-
- It is impossible to see the crescent from the areas located under the red color. Because either the Moon on this day sets before the Sunset and/or the topocentric conjunction occurs after the Sunset.
- The crescent is expected to be seen by optical aid only from the areas located under the blue color.
- The crescent is expected to be seen by optical aid from the areas located under the magenta color. In these areas the crescent could be seen by naked eye if the atmospheric conditions are superb and the observer is experienced.
- The crescent is expected to be easily visible by naked eye from the areas located under the green color.
- The crescent cannot be seen from uncolored areas, even though the Moon sets in these locations after the Sunset and the topocentric conjunction occurs before the Sunset, but the Moon is not sufficiently illuminated in order to be seen as crescent even by optical aid.
- Kindly notice that the below graph shows the possibility of seeing the crescent from areas between 60 degrees north of Equator down to 60 degrees south of Equator.
According to the Universal Hejric Calendar (UHC), which is based on the calculated crescent visibility, the start of this month in the Eastern Region will be on Saturday 16 September 2023 and in the Western Region will be on Saturday 16 September 2023. Kindly notice that the UHC is a pre-calculated calendar, which adopts a certain criterion to start the new Hejric month. Your country/organization might adopt different criterion to start the new Hejric month. So it is highly advised to read the UHC website before giving any judgment.

Mr. Juned Patel said: "Alhamdulillah, another day which I was waiting to chase the moon. Almost all the parts of the UK were covered in clouds but still took a calculated risk and went on a 400-mile round trip. I saw the moon through binoculars and captured a single picture with a DSLR camera too. I usually refrain from mentioning the visibility codes but this is how many understand so let me tell you this was the Code D moon. More details are below and the pictures are attached. - Searching New Evening Waxing Crescent Moon - 16 September 2023, Saturday - Islamic Lunar Month of Rabi al-Awwal 1445 - Location: Hunstanton, West Norfolk, UK - Observer's Name: Juned Patel from Bolton, UK - Actual Search conducted between 16:55 to 20:00 Observations Details: - Reach at the destination around 16:38 - Finished setting the equipment around 16:55 - First captured the image of the crescent moon using an Astro Camera at 17:13 - Only become visible through binoculars at 18:44 when Moon's Alt +7.9° Sun's Alt +3.6° - Prior to this despite I was able to see through the Astro camera and pointing at the exact location but still could not see through binoculars or telescope eyepiece. - Then I jumped on to capture the moon using a DSLR camera as I had 1 or two minutes before it would go behind the dense clouds for the rest of the evening and Alhamdulillah captured with the DSLR at 18:45. ✖ The crescent was not seen with the naked eye. Eng. Qamar Uddin said: "It was totally cloudy in York today (16/9/2023), so the four of us could not see the moon, unfortunately. However, it was my first opportunity to install a removable telescope pillar in an open field with a clear view of the western horizon. I have been working on this project for the last few weeks and managed to get the control software (SynScan) to drive a computerised telescope (Skywatcher AZ GTI with ST80). I hope to calibrate it on a clear night so it will be easier to find the moon after sunset, InshaAllah."

Dr. Javad Torabinejad said: "Using a pair of binoculars (7X50), earlier today (Saturday, Sep 16) I sighted the crescent at 2:34 pm EDT. The horns were approximately at 1:00 and 3:30 O'clock (1:00;2:30;3:30). At that time the sky was partly cloudy. Later in the evening, the sky became more cloudy which prevented me from seeing the crescent. Pictures show the sky conditions for the two events."

Ever since John Polacheck and I saw the crescent at 6.5 degrees elongation, and Sky and Telescope dismissed us by saying, “That’s below Danjon’s Limit. We are going to wait until you make more observations before accepting your report.”, I have been looking for the opportunity of conditions coming together so that we could report an additional observation. Unfortunately Dr. Polacheck passed before the opportunity arose. Dr. Bradley Schaefer accompanied me up the mountain to the very spot that John and I made the historic observation, 19 years to the day earlier. The next day (October 14th) was payday. Although the sky looked beautiful, the equipment was soaked with dew. So little was seen near the horizon that I was never sure of the star patterns. Nevertheless, we went through the procedure, but never saw anything. The sun rose with so much junk between us and the horizon that we could view the sun naked eye, comfortably.
