When to Observe ?

The geocentric new Moon will occur Inshalla on Wednesday (27 Aug 2003), at 17:26 UT. On this day (Wednesday 27 Aug 2003), it is not possible to see the crescent from anywhere on Earth.

While on the next day (Thursday 28 Aug 2003) the program Moon Calculator by Dr. Monzur Ahmed -according to Yallop criterion- showed that it is possible to see the crescent by optical aid from the west parts of Pacific Ocean, parts of Australia, Asia, and Northren Europe. While it should be seen by naked eyes from most parts of Asia, Southren Europe, Africa, and North, Central and South America.

According to the actual sighting of the crescent, the start of Rajab should be on Friday 29 Aug 2003 in all countries.

Results of Observation

So far, the earliest sighting of the crescent was on Thursday 28 Aug from Malysia by Mr. Baharrudin Zainal.

    • ICOP member Mr. Alireza Mehrani: Seen.
    • ICOP member Mr. Amir Hasanzadeh: Not seen. (Cloudy)
  • Jordan
    • ICOP member Dr. Tarek Katbeh: Seen. "The hilal Rejab 1424 was seen by Eng. Mohd Odeh and Dr. Tarek Katbeh at Al elbait observatory by 16 inch meade LX200 ".
  • Algeria
    • ICOP member Mr. Bankih Kacem: Seen. "the crescent observed by one member of the club with the help of the binocular, during 02 minutes.It was 13 persents in the site of Merkich. ".
  • South Africa
    • ICOP member Mr. Abdurrazak Ebrahim: Not seen. "The Rajab Hilaal was not sighted in Cape Town due to a heavy clouded sky. The Hilaal was sighted in Johannesburg and in Port Elizabeth"
  • Nigeria
    • ICOP member Mr. Usman Dukku: Not seen. "We did not organise sighting today due to clouds here in Bauchi"
  • Germany
    • ICOP member Mr. Gerhard Ahmad Kaufmann: Not seen. Clouds
  • USA
    • ICOP member Mr. Jim Stamm: Seen. "There were many clouds in the sky, and this observation would have been trivial without them. It turned out that it was trivial anyway."
    • ICOP member Dr. Muhammad Hafiz: Seen. "The New Crescent was seen after sunset on Thursday, August 28th 2003 at 8:15 PM in Opa Locka Florida, USA. It was easily visible for 7 min. and later became obscured by moving rainy clouds. "
    • ICOP member Ms. Mary Singer: Seen. "Very slender crescent observed at 19:50 pacific daylight time through 10x50 binoculars. Observed naked eye at 19:51. (Brilliant orange sunset earlier, due to all the low smoke from area forest fires"
