Visibility of Rabee' II Crescent
(1424 AH)

Last Updated 10 April 2004
In this page:-

When to Observe ?

The geocentric new Moon will occur Inshalla on Saturday (31 May 2003), at 04:20 UT. On this day , the program Moon Calculator by Dr. Monzur Ahmed -according to Yallop criterion- showed that it is possible to see the crescent by optical aid from parts of North America, Central America and the Northern parts of South America, and by naked eyes from the Eastern parts of Pacific Ocean. While on the next day (Sunday 01 June 2003), the crescent should be seen by naked eyes from almost everywhere on Earth.

According to the actual sighting of the crescent, the start of Rabee' II should be on Monday 02 June 2003 or on Sunday 01 June 2003 in the America Continents.

The visibility parabola as plotted by the program Moon Calculator

- Results of seeing the crescent, and the first day of the month in different countries will be added here Inshalla as we receive the reports from ICOP's members. If you wish to be a member in ICOP, or to know more about it, kindly click here.

Results of Observation

So far, the earliest sighting of the crescent was on Sunday 01 June 2003 from Algeria by ICOP member Mr. Bankih Kacem.

Saturday 31 May 2003:

  • Kuwait
    • ICOP member Mr. Hussain Khshaish: Not seen. "On Sat 31 may 2003 we could not see the crescent and the western sky was cloudy that we could not see the sun disc 30 minutes before actual sunset ."

  • Algeria
    • ICOP member Mr. Bankih Kacem: Not seen. "The crescent was not observed, western horizon was partly cloudy. It was 08 members here in Merkich."

  • Nigeria
    • ICOP member Mr. Usman Duhhu: Not seen. "It was cloudy here in Bauchi."

  • USA
    • ICOP member Dr. Muhammad Hafiz: Not seen. " I tried to observe the New Crescent by naked eyes on Saturday, May 31st, 2003 in Opa Locka, Florida, USA. The skies were clear but no Crescent was seen. This finding supports the calculation since no optical aid was used for observation."
Sunday 01 June 2003:

  • Saudi Arabia
    • ICOP member Mr. Anwar Al-Muhammad: Not seen. "As a monthly activity of Qatif Astronomy Society QAS we tried to sight the new crescent of RabeaII, in the eastern area of Saudi Arabia “Al-Aujam- 26:33N, 49:47E” in Sunday 1, June. To do so, we used a computerized 10” LX-200. Few members of QAS were sighting but we could not see the crescent even by the telescope. Because, the western horizon was too hazy and dusty, such that the sun disappears 30 minutes earlier to the actual time of sun set. In the nearby place, 3 persons claimed that they saw the crescent by the naked eye, in the previous day."

  • Algeria
    • ICOP member Mr. Bankih Kacem: Seen. "For this second day of observation we have seen the Rabii2 crescent from BOUAMIYED in Beni Isguen."

  • Nigeria
    • ICOP member Mr. Usman Duhhu: Seen. "The crescent was easily vissible this evening in Bauchi."

  • South Africa
    • ICOP member Mr. Abdurrazak Ebrahim: Seen. "The Hilaal for Rabiul Thani - 1424 was sighted at various localities in Southern Africa."

  • Germany
    • ICOP member Mr. Gerhard Ahmad Kaufmann: Seen.

  • USA
    • ICOP member Dr. Muhammad Hafiz: Seen. "The New Crescent was seen at 8:25 PM in Opa Lock, Florida, USA. The New Crescent was to the left of the setted sun and the horns were pointing at a 3 o'clock and 8 o'clock position. Again, this finding corresponds to the calculation."
