Rabee Thani Waxing (NEW) Crescent Observation Results

So far, the earliest sighting of the crescent was on Tuesday 17 April 2007 by ICOP member Jim Stamm and John Polacheck from USA.

Tuesday 17 April 2007:

  • Indonesia: Cloudy: ICOP member, Mr. Susiknan Azhari said: "The day is rains. I can't go to observation. In Yogyakarta latitude -7,8 and longitude 110,35. Muhammadiyah Calendar and Taqwim Standar Indonesia (Indonesia Ministry of Religion Affairs) announced that 1 Rabiul Akhir 1428 H is corresponding to Thursday, 10 April 2007."

  • Kuwait: Not Seen: ICOP member Mr. Hussain Khushaish said: "I could not sight the crescent even with 20*60 binocular. The western horizon was hazy that the sun disck disappeared 15 minutes before our local sunset. Venus was seen 5 minutes before sunset."

  • Saudi Arabia: Not Seen: ICOP member Mr. Saleh Al-Saab said: "The crescent was only (1.2) degree above horizon beside bad weather, so it was not seen. Also the next day weather was not helping."

  • USA: Seen: ICOP member Mr. Jim Stamm said:
    Location = Tucson, Arizona (USA)
    Longitude = 110.9353 W
    Latitude = 32.4261 N
    Elevation = 840 meters
    Time Zone = -7.0 hours

    Surface conditions at time of first sighting at
    Tucson International Airport (805 m):
    Temperature = 22 degrees Celcius
    Relative Humidity = 20 percent
    Atmospheric Pressure = 1015 mb

    Topocentric and local time values from “Accurate Times”:
    Sunset (at sea level) = 19:00 (18:51 from our vantage point)
    Moonset (at sea level) = 19:43 (19:38 from our vantage point)
    Time from new moon at 18:58 = 15 hr. 06 min.
    Moon lag time = 43 minutes
    Relative Altitude = 8.4 degrees
    Elongation from sun = 8.6 degrees
    Crescent width = 11 arcseconds
    Illumination = 0.57 percent

    Crescent first observed through 8” SC telescope:
    Time = 18:58
    Altitude = 6.7 degrees

    Final observation with telescope:
    Time = 19:38
    Altitude = -1.0 degrees

    This was the prettiest crescent that we’ve seen. At first only about 5 arc-degrees was visible. It looked too straight to be the crescent, but the image persisted and we finally had to accept it. After several minutes, the crescent seemed to spread out to 80 arc- degrees, instantaneously. Gradually it grew to about 90 arc-degrees, and the brighter sections became “connected.” We watched it for a total of 40 minutes, until we could see the horns speeding through the trees on the horizon, which was maybe about 6 kilometers away.

ICOP Official Statement

When to Observe Rabee Awwal Waning (OLD) Crescent ?

The geocentric conjunction (Geocentric New Moon) will occur Inshalla on (Tuesday 17 April 2007) at 11:36 UT.

Sighting the OLD crescent on (Monday 16 April 2007) and on (Tuesday 17 April 2007) is shown in the below graphs using the program Accurate Times by Mohammad Odeh according to Odeh criterion. Where:-

  • It is impossible to see the OLD crescent from the areas located under the red color. Because either the Moon on this day rises after the Sunrise and/or the topocentric conjunction occurs before the Sunrise.
  • The crescent is expected to be seen by optical aid only from the areas located under the blue color.
  • The crescent is expected to be seen by optical aid from the areas located under the magenta color. In these areas the crescent could be seen by naked eye if the atmospheric conditions are superb and the observer is experienced.
  • The crescent is expected to be easily visible by naked eye from the areas located under the green color.
  • The crescent can not be seen from uncolored areas, even though the Moon rises in these locations before the Sunrise and the topocentric conjunction occurs after the Sunrise, but the Moon is not sufficiently illuminated in order to be seen as crescent even by optical aid.
  • Kindly notice that the below graph shows the possibility of seeing the crescent from areas between 60 degrees north of Equator down to 60 degrees south of Equator.
