When to Observe Rabee' Al-Aakher Waxing (NEW) Crescent ?
The geocentric conjunction (Geocentric New Moon) will occur Inshalla on (Tuesday 25 October 2022) at 10:49 UT.
Sighting the new crescent on (Tuesday 25 October 2022) and (Wedensday 26 October 2022) is shown in the below graphs using the program Accurate Times by Mohammad Odeh according to Odeh criterion. Where:-
- It is impossible to see the crescent from the areas located under the red color. Because either the Moon on this day sets before the Sunset and/or the topocentric conjunction occurs after the Sunset.
- The crescent is expected to be seen by optical aid only from the areas located under the blue color.
- The crescent is expected to be seen by optical aid from the areas located under the magenta color. In these areas the crescent could be seen by naked eye if the atmospheric conditions are superb and the observer is experienced.
- The crescent is expected to be easily visible by naked eye from the areas located under the green color.
- The crescent cannot be seen from uncolored areas, even though the Moon sets in these locations after the Sunset and the topocentric conjunction occurs before the Sunset, but the Moon is not sufficiently illuminated in order to be seen as crescent even by optical aid.
- Kindly notice that the below graph shows the possibility of seeing the crescent from areas between 60 degrees north of Equator down to 60 degrees south of Equator.
Tuesday 25 October 2022
Wedensday 26 October 2022
According to the Universal Hejric Calendar (UHC), which is based on the calculated crescent visibility, the start of this month in the Eastern Region will be on Thursday 27 October 2022 and in the Western Region will be on Thursday 27 October 2022. Kindly notice that the UHC is a pre-calculated calendar, which adopts a certain criterion to start the new Hejric month. Your country/organization might adopt different criterion to start the new Hejric month. So it is highly advised to read the UHC website before giving any judgment.
- Results of seeing the crescent, and the first day of the month in different countries will be added here Inshalla as we receive the reports from ICOP's members. If you wish to be a member in ICOP, or to know more about it, kindly click here.

======================================
Observed: Tuesday; October 25, 2022 at 17:57 (Local Time)
Location (WGS 84): Windy Point, Mt. Lemmon , Arizona (USA)
Longitude = 110.7160 W
Latitude = 32.3676 N
Elevation = 2003 meters
Time Zone = -7.0 hours
Surface conditions at Mt. Lemmon:
Temperature = 65.0 °F
Dew Point = 24.6 °F
Barometric Pressure = 27.41 inches (sea level)
Completely clear sky. One of the best that I’ve seen.
Topocentric and local time values from “Accurate Times”:
Sunset (at sea level) = 17:47
..Moonset (at sea level) = 18:06
Time from new moon at 17.55 = .15 hr. 15 min.
Moon lag time = . 18 min.
Relative Altitude = 3.9 degrees
Elongation from sun = 6.9 degrees
Crescent width = 7 arc sec
Illumination = 0.37 percent
Crescent not observed through 8” SC F/10 telescope with 25mm eyepiece:
I was not able to use any reference stars or planets (Venus too close to the sun, Arcturus too red?), so I had to off-set from the sun which is never absolutely precise.
Consequently, I felt that the crescent was within the field-of-view, but could not be positive that it was centered.
Only the usual false crescents showed up, and they teased me by showing up in the same place. None lasted more than two seconds, and my observing partner was never able to confirm any of them. The “teasing” lasted for 20 minutes, but the images never improved as the sky darkened. They also were not consistent with the Moon’s “change in declination” path.

Because of clouds, haze, and my eyesight, it took me another 46 minutes to positively sight the moon with naked eye at (6:56 pm). The horns were approximately at 1:30 and 6:00 O'clock (1:30;4:00;6:00). I followed the moon by naked eye and binoculars till it disappeared below clouds very close to the real horizon. At 7:09 pm, I saw its upper horn set (moonset: 7:13 pm)."
