When to Observe Sha'ban Waxing (NEW) Crescent ?
The geocentric conjunction (Geocentric New Moon) will occur Inshalla on (Monday 20 February 2023) at 07:06 UT.
Sighting the new crescent on (Monday 20 February 2023) and (Tuesday 21 February 2023) is shown in the below graphs using the program Accurate Times by Mohammad Odeh according to Odeh criterion. Where:-
- It is impossible to see the crescent from the areas located under the red color. Because either the Moon on this day sets before the Sunset and/or the topocentric conjunction occurs after the Sunset.
- The crescent is expected to be seen by optical aid only from the areas located under the blue color.
- The crescent is expected to be seen by optical aid from the areas located under the magenta color. In these areas the crescent could be seen by naked eye if the atmospheric conditions are superb and the observer is experienced.
- The crescent is expected to be easily visible by naked eye from the areas located under the green color.
- The crescent cannot be seen from uncolored areas, even though the Moon sets in these locations after the Sunset and the topocentric conjunction occurs before the Sunset, but the Moon is not sufficiently illuminated in order to be seen as crescent even by optical aid.
- Kindly notice that the below graph shows the possibility of seeing the crescent from areas between 60 degrees north of Equator down to 60 degrees south of Equator.

According to the Universal Hejric Calendar (UHC), which is based on the calculated crescent visibility, the start of this month in the Eastern Region will be on Tuesday 21 February 2023 and in the Western Region will be on Tuesday 21 February 2023. Kindly notice that the UHC is a pre-calculated calendar, which adopts a certain criterion to start the new Hejric month. Your country/organization might adopt different criterion to start the new Hejric month. So it is highly advised to read the UHC website before giving any judgment.

Eng. Qamar Uddin said: "It was a cloudy forecast in York today (20/2/2023) but in practice, there was a patch of clear sky near the sunset position where the moon (at 1° altitude) was expected to be seen (see photos) but it was not seen."

Qamar Uddin said: "The three of us (I, Dr Bashir Dodo and Aqeale Peero) saw the Shaban 1444 Hilal from York today (21/2/2023) at 17:45 hrs GMT, soon after we prayed Maghrib at 17:30 hrs GMT (sunset was at 17:25 GMT). We arrived at the location at 17:00 hrs and clearly saw the sunset position and estimated the position of the moon to be about 10° to the left of sunset, well above a landmark on the western horizon. We saw the Hilal with the naked eye exactly at the position estimated and our group members were really pleased to witness the moon first-hand where it was predicted, Alhamdulillah [bit.ly/Results1444-08a]"

Dr. Javad Torabinejad said: "At 1:49 pm EST, using a pair of binocular (7X50), I looked for the moon. My binocular sighting was at 1:52 pm followed by naked eye sighting at 2:00 pm. The horns were at 2:00 and 5:30 o'clock (2:00;3:30;5:30); this determination was with binoculars only as the moon was not clearly visible with naked eye."

Dr. Javad Torabinejad said: " arrived at my sighting location at 5:46 pm EST (Apparent sunset: 6:04 pm, setting behind distant trees). The western horizon was mostly clear and hazy. Using a pair of binoculars (7X50), I scanned the horizon. This time, I sighted the crescent moon first at 5:48 pm and then Venus. My first naked eye sighting was 5:50 pm. The horns were at 2:30 and 7:30 o'clock (2:30;5:00;7:30). Venus and Jupiter were seen with the binoculars at 5:53 pm and 6:11 pm, respectively. The naked eye sighting of them were respectively at 5:56 pm and 6:21 pm. I left the sighting location well before the moonset (moonset: 7:58 pm)."

When to Observe Rajab Waning (OLD) Crescent ?
The geocentric conjunction (Geocentric New Moon) will occur Inshalla on (Monday 20 February 2023) at 07:06 UT.
Sighting the OLD crescent on (Monday 20 February 2023) and (Sunday 19 February 2023) is shown in the below graphs using the program Accurate Times by Mohammad Odeh according to Odeh criterion. Where:-
- It is impossible to see the OLD crescent from the areas located under the red color. Because either the Moon on this day rises after the Sunrise and/or the topocentric conjunction occurs before the Sunrise.
- The crescent is expected to be seen by optical aid only from the areas located under the blue color.
- The crescent is expected to be seen by optical aid from the areas located under the magenta color. In these areas the crescent could be seen by naked eye if the atmospheric conditions are superb and the observer is experienced.
- The crescent is expected to be easily visible by naked eye from the areas located under the green color.

Dr. Javad Torabinejad said: "I arrived at my sighting location at 6:24 am EST (moonrise: 6:16 am). The eastern horizon was clear. Using a pair of binoculars (7X50), I started looking for the crescent. My first binocular sighting of the crescent moon was at 6:30 am as the moon was coming up from behind distant trees. Soon after, I saw it with the naked eye. The horns were approximately at 6:00 and 11:00 O'clock (6:00;8:30;11:00). While I was leaving the area at 6:46 am, I still could see the moon (sunrise: 7:03 am)."
