The geocentric new Moon will occur Inshallah on (Thursday 10 March 2005), at 09:10 UT. On this day the program Moon Calculator by Dr. Monzur Ahmed -according to Yallop criterion- shows that it will not be possible to see the crescent from almost any part of the world; however, the central western parts of the Americas will stage for a very challenging opportunity for this months observation with optical aid.
While on the next day (Friday 11 March 2005) the crescent should be easily visible from almost all parts of the globe.
According to the actual sighting of the crescent, the start of Safar should be on Saturday 12 March 2005 almost for all countries of the world. The results and the first day of the month in different countries will be added here, Inshallah, as we receive the reports from ICOP's members. ICOP member Jim Stamm in Tucson, Arizona SEEN (I had acquired the correct field and had the proper focus set in the afternoon, but acquired no image. At 17:30 I decided the focus had changed because of the altitude difference, so I ran through the acquisition procedure again. When I saw no image at 18:15, I began to question my numbers, and even scanned the area with binoculars. At 18:31 the image came into view. I was on the correct field all the time. The image was broken in the middle with about 15% of the crescent being invisible. Length of crescent was about 35°. I estimated the length at:
18:35 40° the break had filled in
18:38 40°
18:41 38°
18:43 52°
18:46 60°
After this, I began showing some neighbors the Moon, and did not get a measurement before the image slipped behind some trees.)
