When to Observe ?

The geocentric new Moon will occur on Saturday 25 November 2000, at 23:11 UT. On this day (25 November) the crescent will not be visible from anywhere on Earth, while on the next day (26 November), the program Moon Calculator by Dr. Monzur Ahmed -according to Yallop criterion- showed that the crescent should be seen by telescopes starting from Africa, while the crescent is expected to be seen by naked eyes from America continents only. On the next day (27 November), the crescent should be visible by naked eyes from nearly everywhere. Consequently, arrange to observe the crescent after the sunset of 26 or 27 November. ACCORDING TO THE ACTUAL SIGHTING OF THE CRESCENT, THE START OF RAMADAN SHOULD BE ON 27 NOVEMBER, or on 28 November in some eastern countries. Kindly click on the below icon to see the visibility parabola as plotted by the program Moon Calculator

Results of seeing the crescent, and the first day of the month in different countries will be added here Inshalla as we receive the reports from ICOP's members. If you wish to be a member in ICOP, or to know more about it, kindly click here.

The SECOND Official AUASS Statement

On Friday 24 November 2000 the CCMC of the AUASS had issued another statement showing its resentment from countries which asked the people to search for the crescent on Saturday 25 November! Mass Media Response

So far the Jordanian mass media response is good. Please find below some of these responses:-

  1. Amman Net made an interview with Mohammad Odeh asking him about the last Islamic seminar held by JAS, and the Evaluation of the error percentage in determining the beginning of lunar months in Jordan. Kindly CLICK HERE to read about the interview. Or CLICK HERE to hear the interview.

  2. All the main local Jordanian newspapers had published the Official AUASS Statement.

  3. A detailed article appeared in one of the most popular Jordanian local newspapers Al-Rai'. The article discussed the issue of Ramadan from Islamic and Astronomical view. Where Al-Rai' made interviews with Islamic scholars, astronomers, and ordinary people. The astronomical view was represented by JAS, where Al-Rai' meet Mohammad Odeh. The article appeared in the newspaper in a complete 'large' paper! CLICK HERE To read the article in Arabic.

  4. Amman Net made another interview with Mohammad Odeh commenting on what the Jordanian Chief Justice had said. To read/hear what both had said kindly CLICK HERE to read about the interview. Or CLICK HERE to hear the interview.

The Official Jordanian Meeting on 29 Sha'ban 1421 H

The official meeting this year went great! During the discussion, they said since the astronomers say that the Moon will set before the Sun, then tomorrow Sunday 27 November is NOT the first of Ramadan 1421 AH! This decision was taken BEFORE knowing what Saudi or ANY other country will say! Thus, Ramadan in Jordan will be on Monday 27 November 2000, which is really great! Ramadan Mubarak!
